Chapter Seven

Cindy glanced at Emma. ‘Are you feeling all right? You seem a little pale.’

‘I’m fine. I think I ate something yesterday and I felt a bit off. I’m right now. Perhaps a little washed out, that’s all.’

‘I can’t thank you enough, Em. I’m sure there won’t be too many customers this morning and Molly can occupy herself.’

‘I don’t mind. Where is she?’

‘Molly. Emma is here.’

Molly’s glossy hair swayed around her shoulders as she skipped into the shop.

‘Hello, Aunty Em.’

Emma smiled. ‘Hello, sweetie.’ She bent and put her arms around Molly, exchanging a warm cuddle. ‘I think you’ve grown since the last time I saw you.’

‘She never stops.’

‘What time is your appointment?’

‘In about fifteen minutes.’

‘You should get going then. Don’t worry, Molly and I will be fine.’

Cindy kissed Molly on the cheek. ‘I won’t be long sweetie. Pity it’s a pupil free day, otherwise you’d be at school.’

‘I don’t mind. I get to see Aunty Emma.’

‘See you soon.’ The door to the store closed behind her and Emma walked around the store familiarising herself with the stock. Without any customers she perched on a stool behind the counter next to Molly.

‘You’ve been busy, haven’t you?’ Emma admired all the colourful beads.

‘This one is pretty,’ Molly said, holding up a strand of blue and white beads.

‘You’re a natural. I love blue and white together, or what about these.’ She reached into a box in front of her and selected a silver bead. ‘I also love blue and silver.’

‘Me too.’ Molly took the bead from Emma, before searching for more of the same colour. Emma made a necklace and a bracelet while Molly was on her third bracelet.

‘You work fast.’

‘I’ve been doing it for three years.’

‘That long. Wow. You’re a professional.’

Emma left Molly on a few occasions to serve customers. Returning to Molly, she made another bracelet and necklace. Two hours later Cindy walked through the store entrance.

‘It looks like you two are having fun.’

‘We are, aren’t we Molly?’

‘We’ve made heaps of bracelets and necklaces. I can sell them to the girls at school.’

‘An entrepreneur in the making.’

Cindy giggled as Emma pushed to her feet.

‘You weren’t that long.’

‘I didn’t have to wait long. Did you have any customers?’

‘Three, with one big sale.’

‘That’s something.’

‘How’d you go with the solicitor?’

‘It’s all sorted. If anything happens to me, Molly will be taken care of.’

‘That’s good to hear.’

‘Would you like a cuppa?’

‘I’d love one.’

Cindy leaned over the counter, and kissed Molly on the cheek. ‘How about you? Do you want a juice?’

‘Yes, please.’

‘Come on then.’

They followed Cindy into a back room where a kitchenette, a table and four chairs took up the small room. Molly scrambled onto a chair, while Cindy set the jug to boil.

‘I was thinking on my walk back here, Em. Why don’t you give up on the petition?’

‘What? I have no intentions of backing down. None whatsoever.’ Emma squinted. ‘I never thought I’d hear that from you.’

‘It’s just with the threats and everything that’s going on, I thought you might reconsider. It seems dangerous.
